How it works

BMI is weight divided by height squared:

BMI = weight (kg) / [ height (m) ]2

Using imperial units:

BMI = 703 × weight (lb) / [ height (in) ]2

The standard adult categories are: under 18.5 = underweight, 18.5–24.9 = normal, 25–29.9 = overweight, 30+ = obese.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a useful population-level screen but it can't tell muscle from fat. Very muscular people may read as 'overweight', and it isn't validated for children, pregnant people, or the very elderly. Treat it as a starting point, not a diagnosis.
What is a healthy BMI range?
For most adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered the healthy range. Below 18.5 is underweight and 25 or above is overweight, but a clinician will also weigh other factors.
Does BMI differ for men and women?
The BMI formula and adult categories are the same regardless of sex. Body composition does differ on average, which is one reason BMI is a screen rather than a precise measure of health.
Should I see a doctor about my BMI?
If your BMI is outside the healthy range, or you have other risk factors, talk to a healthcare professional. They can assess your full picture — waist size, blood pressure, activity and diet.
